Public Services Librarian


Ohio Wesleyan University is a selective, private, undergraduate liberal arts, residential institution founded in 1842 and is located 20 miles north of Columbus. The Libraries at Ohio Wesleyan University invites applications for the position of Public Services Librarian.  A professional librarian who is a voting member of the faculty, the Public Services Librarian has responsibility for providing quality library instruction and research support to the OWU population, serving as library liaison to assigned departments and programs (currently English, Sociology/Anthropology, Education, and Theatre/Dance departments as well as some first year experience courses), and providing reference services virtually and in-person.

Required Qualifications       

The Public Services Librarian must have an ALA-accredited MLS; second master’s or equivalent training in another discipline is desired; and have a minimum of three years progressively responsible experience in academic libraries, including extensive expertise with information literacy. Other key skills include ability to work consortially, the ability to form a strong rapport with faculty and students, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written). Must be a self-starter and able to work independently as well as a part of a team in a collegial environment. Must have good problem solving skills and exercise sound judgment in dealing with a variety of issues. 

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate, graduate or equivalent work training in English or Literature

  2. Experience with first year experience groups or activities

  3. Proficient in the use of social media and/or experience managing an organization’s social media presence. 

General Responsibilities

  1. Serves as librarian liaison to departments and programs as assigned (currently Education, English, Music, Philosophy, Sociology/Anthropology, and Theatre/Dance)

  2. Teaches course-related instruction/information literacy classes, including first year courses (ENG 105, UC 160)

  3. Provides reference services virtually and in person

  4. Responsible for collection development in assigned areas

  5. Assists in using emerging technologies to support library services

  6. Participates as a member of the Public Services staff, which includes participation in library-wide planning and serving on library committees.

  7. Provides University service

  8. Represents OWU and works collaboratively with consortial counterparts (Five Colleges of Ohio, CONSORT, and OhioLINK)

  9. Maintains confidentiality

  10. Other duties as assigned
