Associate Director of Libraries


The Oberlin College Libraries (OCL) seeks an innovative, creative, and visionary leader for the position of Associate Director of Libraries. The successful candidate will serve as a direct report to the Director of Libraries (the Director). The Associate Director fills a mission-critical role within OCL, serving as the second in charge of the Libraries in the absence of the Director, as the unit’s budget manager with responsibility for approximately $6.7 million dollars annually, and as the Head of the Technical Services Group.

The Associate Director is a member of OCL Administration along with the Director, Assistant Director/Head of Public Services, the Administrative Secretary to the Director, and the Facilities and Operations Assistant.

The Associate Director of Libraries provides and inspires leadership for the Technical Services Group. The successful candidate will supervise two department heads (the Head of Collections and Acquisitions and the Head of Discovery and Metadata Services), one team leader (Digital Initiatives Team), the Visual Resources Curator, and the Emerging Technologies and Systems Librarian. The group comprises 15 individuals including 11 support staff members.

The Associate Director also has significant ongoing interactions with the Assistant Director/Head of Public Services and other library departments including the College Archives, the Special Collections and Preservation Department, and OCL’s Art, Conservatory, and Science branch libraries. A diplomatic disposition is essential to success in the role, as the Associate Director will also interface with OCL donors, the Department of Finance, the Department of Facilities and Operations, the Dean of the College’s Budget Manager, and the Controller’s office.

   Inspire and provide leadership for OCL’s technical services operations: 40%

  • Provide support and growth opportunities for technical services staff in the rapidly developing areas of library technology-related services.          
  • Engage the Technical Services Group in synergistic connection with the Department of Public Services.
  • Assure that OCL deploys an optimal array of technology and services as part of its curricular and research support mission, including library systems and digital collections operations.  
  • Work with all library staff to plan and coordinate implementation of new library technologies.
  • Frequently represent the libraries: in information technology projects and discussions on campus, within the Five Colleges of Ohio and OhioLINK consortia, and among library professionals.

   OCL Budget Management: 20%

  • Work with Oberlin College Banner budget software, Excel, and other software tools to analyze, plan, and monitor annual $7 million library operational and $2.6 million capital budgets.
  • Provide routine and customized budgetary reports and projections for the Director, department heads, college administrators, and faculty library committee.
  • Coordinate assigning OCL staff to manage unit budgets, including endowed and grant budgeted funds.

   Other Administrative Duties: 30%

  • Manage OCL in the absence of the Director of Libraries.
  • Participate in and coordinate library space and building planning projects.
  • Participate in library grant program development, budgeting, and administration.
  • Collaborate with the Director and other staff to support the Oberlin College Book Studies curricular concentration.
  • Collaborate with the Director and other staff to support the 600+ member Friends of the Oberlin College Libraries organization.

   Miscellaneous Duties: 10%

  • Act as a collection development liaison for one or more academic departments.
  • Maintain currency with library functions, resources, practices and procedures.
  • Represent OCL within the Oberlin campus and community in coordination with the Director.
  • Contribute to the life of the College and Conservatory by participating actively in campus committees.
  • Contribute to the development of library programs, services, and expertise through participation in task forces, working groups, and implementation committees.
  • Contribute to the profession through active participation in relevant conferences, associations, and publication.

Required Qualifications      

  • Masters level or above degree in the field of library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • 5 years of experience in professional library technical services positions with increasing organizational and managerial responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience working with library budgets and data-driven assessment.
  • Demonstrated success in managing teams and promoting cooperative working relationships and excellent performance.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated record of creativity and innovative thinking.
  • Strong capacity to self-direct and be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and abilities and comfortable working in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse community of stakeholders.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Experience with strategic collection management.
  • Experience with discovery layers.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster emerging technologies and pedagogies.
  • Experience in fostering faculty and student led digital initiatives collaborations.
  • Experience with library space management and building renovation projects.
  • Graduate degree in an additional academic area of study.
  • Integrated library systems migration experience

Compensation:  Within the range established for this position, salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
