University Archivist


Willamette University, the oldest university in the West, invites applications for the position of University Archivist. This twelve-month position is embedded in the Mark O. Hatfield Library and reports to the University Librarian.  The incumbent is responsible for the administration and operation of the University Archives which is the repository of institutional record of enduring value, unique special collections (including the Pacific Northwest Artists Archive and the Political Papers), and the University’s records management program.

The University Archivist is responsible for the management of physical and financial resources, planning and implementation of archives programming and policies, and security of the collections.  The Archivist ensures that the collections represent the broadest possible spectrum of viewpoints and human experience in accordance with Willamette’s commitment to equity and inclusion. 

The successful candidate will be a member of the Hatfield Library’s management team and directly supervise the Processing Archivist and Records Manager,  student workers, and grant funded positions. As part of a team of accomplished and dedicated individuals, the University Archivist encourages professional development, service, and collaboration, including participation in Orbis Cascade Alliance consortial initiatives.

The University Archivist will collaborate with the archives and library staff as well as faculty to maximize the Archives’ and the Library’s contributions to teaching and learning at Willamette, including providing reference services, classroom instruction, public programming, and an active student internship program.  Working in concert with the University Librarian and the Advancement Office, the University Archivist maintains strong and active relationships with donors and our community and establishes and communicates the vision for the Archives of the future.   The incumbent will collaborate with the University Librarian and Office of Grants and Strategic Initiatives to maintain an active grant application practice.
