The College provides a highly individualized education focused on co-creation of knowledge to its approximately 1,400 undergraduate students and 250 graduate-level students. Reporting to the Provost and Dean of Faculty, the successful candidate for the library directorship must be able to draw on best practices and provide a strategic vision for the library in order to support the research, learning and teaching needs of approximately 1,600 students and 175 faculty. 

Library collections include 300,000 print volumes, over 300,000 e-books, plus thousands more electronic items, including journals, databases, films, and music. The three-story, 53,000 square-foot building houses the College Archives and the Information Technology suite of offices (IT does not report to the library director).  In addition, branch libraries include the Music Library with over 7,000 scores, and a Visual Resources Library with 200,000 digitized images.  Raushenbush Library is a member of the Oberlin Group of libraries; its library management system is OCLC’s WMS system.

Essential Duties Summary

The Library Director is responsible for the efficient management and direction of the library including the oversight of the Main Library, College Archives, Visual Resources Library, Music Library, and supervision of eight professional librarians and four paraprofessional library staff, as well as 35 student workers. Direct reports to the Library Director currently include Head of Access Services, Head of Archives and Research Services, Systems Librarian, and Continuing Resources Librarian.  The Library Director works closely with the library senior staff to establish library policy that supports the College’s educational mission and manages a $700K (operating, i.e., non-personnel) budget. 

The successful candidate will be expected to explore beneficial cooperative agreements within the wide range of libraries in the New York City metro area, as well as other relevant consortia, and to consider ways in which the library might provide new, meaningful spaces to support an evolving learning environment. 

Required Qualifications

·       MLIS/MLS ​degree from an ALA accredited program

·       5 years managerial experience in an academic library

·       Evidence of successful budget management

·       Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of academic library systems

·       Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary academic library systems, practices, trends and emerging technologies

·       Evidence of increased management responsibility in a higher education setting

·       Demonstrated leadership experience

·       Demonstrated ability to advocate for and collaborate with library staff 

·       Demonstrated record of developing student-centered library programs, services and spaces​

·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·       Proficiency in generating and analyzing data from multiple systems

·       Enthusiasm for technological innovation

·       Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong public service orientation
